Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir get into an ugly spat after RCB beat LSG in a low-scoring thriller.

Cricket is known around the world as the Gentleman’s game but sometimes some incidents are very ‘Non-Gentlemanly’. Such incidents like Pollard vs Starc, Pietersen vs Johnson, Bumrah vs Anderson, and Warner vs Samuels are entertaining for some. But in the bigger picture, these are very damaging for the sport. One such incident happened in the IPL when Royal Challengers Bangalore played Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium. RCB managed to defend 126 runs as LSG bundled over for 108 runs in 19.5 overs.

RCB vs LSG

After the game RCB superstar Virat Kohli and LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir shook hands but shortly after things went south. LSG’s opener Kyle Mayers was having a chat with Kohli when Gambhir came in and dragged his player away. It looked like the dispute had come to an end but then two 2011 World Cup heroes squared up despite several members from both sides trying to intervene. Amit Mishra finally succeeded in separating the pair and things cooled down. However, it had turned ugly at the moment with several people involved in the scrap.

Things which led to the drift between RCB and LSG players.

When these two teams met at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, LSG won the match and Gautam Gambhir made a ‘shush’ signal to the crowd. In the reverse fixture at the Ekana Stadium, Virat Kohli was aggressive on the field as he was signalling things to the crowd after every wicket. The former Indian captain even asked the crowd to not ‘shush’ and instead make more noise. Kohli was seen sledging Naveen Ul Haq and Amit Mishra along with the umpires had to intervene. After the match during the customary handshakes, Kohli and Naveen again got into a tussle.

The history between Kohli and Gambhir

IPL fight

This isn’t the first time the two Delhi boys have gotten into a spat. In the 2013 edition of the IPL, RCB captained by Virat Kohli took on KKR captained by Gautam Gambhir. Kohli got out in that game after which Gambhir charged towards him and the pair exchanged some heated words before they were separated. Ever since Gambhir retired he has criticized Kohli quite a few times.

It wasn’t always like this as the two shared several great partnerships in Indian colours. The one in the 2011 World Cup final is the most memorable. Virat Kohli’s first international hundred came against Sri Lanka where India had chased down 316 with 11 balls to spare in an ODI game. Kohli scored 107 off 114 balls while Gambhir smashed 150 off just 137 balls. The left-hander was named the Player of the Match but he gave the award to Kohli as it was his first hundred.

Guilty & Fines for breaching IPL code

Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir were both fined 100% of their match fees while Naveen Ul Haq was fined 50% of his match fee. In a video posted by RCB, Kohli said after entering the dressing room “If you can give it, you gotta take it back as well. Otherwise don’t give it”. He also said that the victory is special for several reasons.

The batter posted a story on Instagram with the quote ‘Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.’ Naveen Ul Haq posted a story presumably in response which read- You get what you deserve, that’s how it should be and that’s how it goes. An aggressive and fired-up Kohli is very dangerous for the opposition so if these two teams meet in the playoffs, Kohli will be fired up more than usual.
